The Conjuring 3 is coming within a few months and it is said to be the "biggest and darkest outing yet" of the franchise. James Wan, the director of the first two installments, won't be directing the next outing. This time, Michael Chaves takes on the directorial duties, which allowed him to bring the story in a new direction.

The Conjuring 3 will continue to follow the real-life married couple Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively. They two are known for dealing with paranormal incidents and the upcoming movie will still feature the two investigating such events.

The first installment of the movie was released in 2013, where it focused on the Rhode Island haunted house that terrorized the owners in 1971. Reportedly, it became one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time, which makes the second outing possible.

The second film hits theaters in 2106, which focused on a single mother of four and seeks the help of the couple after she and her children witnessed paranormal activities in their house. The sequel was also a success and said to surpass the impressive box-office numbers of the first movie.

Now, The Conjuring 3, which comes with the title The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is going to be "biggest and darkest" as teased by Chaves. The Warrens stepped back from the concept of haunted dwellings and they're heading in a different direction this time around.

Speaking to IGN, Chaves said that the third installment is going to be the "biggest Conjuring movie." What makes it different from its predecessors is that it digs in "some really dark materials." The director noted that the movie centers on "a case where there's real consequence, there's real victims."

Everything is going to be new this time around, as Ed and Lorraine won't focus on dealing with evil spirits inside the house -- this time inside the body. The new direction of the movie will deliver more terrifying moments for the Warrens and the family they're about to help.

In The Conjuring 3, the story revolves around the trial of Arne Johnson, who murdered his landlord back in 1981. Shortly after being arrested, he claimed that he was possessed by a demon which makes him the first person in the history of the United States to use demonic possession as a defense.

The case was known as the Devil Made Me Do It case, thus the title. It involved an 11-year-old David Glatzel, who was believed to be possessed. During an attempted exorcism by the Warrens, the boy's family friend Johnson claimed he's possessed by the demon that had taken up residence inside Glatzel.

The Conjuring 3 arrives on June 4, 2021, in both theaters and HBO Max.
