Israeli fighter jets continued to pummel the Gaza Strip in the early hours of Wednesday, flattening residential buildings and killing at least four.

The latest raids came as groups in the territories launched more rockets toward cities in southern Israel.

Workers from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank with jobs in Israel went on a collective strike as governments around the world, including negotiators from Egypt, and activists call for a cease fire.

Some Violence In West Bank Cities

In most areas, the strike was peaceful. However, some parts of the West Bank saw violence as shops in the Old City were shut down and demonstrators began burning tires.

In Ramallah, protesters fought back against troops firing tear gas. Hundreds of residents of the territories hurled stones at an Israeli military checkpoint.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said more than 140 people were injured in clashes between protesters and the Israel army in Hebron, Bethlehem, Ramallah and other cities.

The strike was initiated by leaders of the Palestinian community in Israel. Organizer Muhammad Barakeh said it will start standing up to Israel's "aggression" and "brutal repression."

Many businesses closed are closed as are schools and other public services.

Netanyahu Stands Ground For 'Calm' In Israel

There is increasing international pressure for a cease fire. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said operations will "continue for as long as it takes to restore calm."

On Tuesday two foreign farmworkers were killed after militants in the territories fired rockets into southern Israel. Israel, on the other hand, has been hitting Gaza with airstrikes.

Netanyahu said the nine days of airstrikes on Gaza had dealt "unexpected blows." However, the health ministry said at least 215 people have died in Gaza since May 10.

West Bank, Gaza: Stop Crimes Against Gaza

Member of the Palestine Liberation Organization's executive committee in Ramallah, Wasel Abu Yousef, said its leaders were prioritizing "having Israel stop its crimes and massacres against our people in Gaza."

Israel's airstrikes continued into Wednesday as the Defense Forces targeted tunnels.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated more than 58,000 people have been displaced by the fighting.

World Wants Israel Vs. Gaza To End

Western governments have started moving to halt the war between Israel and Hamas but Netanyahu said his country was receiving support from the U.S.

France President Emmanuel Macron proposed at the United Nations Security Council a resolution that should end the fighting.

Macron's statement said the U.N. Security Council should address the issue as Egypt, France and Jordan all agreed a cease fire should be implemented soon.

U.S. President Joe Biden supports a cease fire.

Despite his support for an end to fighting, Biden reiterated Israel's right to defend itself against the militant group controlling Gaza.

Over the past days of airstrikes at least nine civilians have been killed in Israel but Gaza has seen most of the damage with 61 children included in more than 200 deaths.
