This Is Us season 6 will be the last one for the romantic family drama and it'll wrap up all the storylines hanging up in the air since the beginning. One of the biggest mysteries revolves around Kate Pearson (Chrissy Metz), who remarried in the future timeline.
Some of the questions surrounding Kate's storyline will be answered entering This Is Us season 6. The biggest twist here centers on her romantic life, particularly the idea of her marrying another man. This suggests that her marriage with Toby (Chris Sullivan) didn't work out and they ended up being divorced.
In fact, the flash-forward scenes indicated that the two separated. For instance, Toby showed up alone in Pearson's house while Kate's mother, Rebecca (Mandy Moore), is on her death bed. Also, series creator Dan Fogelman discussed what the future holds for the couple.
In a recent interview with TVLine, Fogelman said that they've already hinted many times in the "deeper future" that "something was not normal between Kate and Toby." He seemingly confirmed that the two were no longer together and moved separately with their lives in This Is Us season 6.
The series creator added that the plan to have Kate remarry has already been on the table. As for who's the man she's going to marry, it was teased that she ended up with her music-school co-worker, Phillip (Chris Geere). This further confirms that her marriage with Toby, indeed, fell apart.
Meanwhile, a lot of things haven't been addressed about Philip. While he may have been cranky at first, he eventually showed a different side of him. Fogelman also said that the character will have an essential role moving forward in This Is Us season 6.
In another report, the final installment of the romantic family drama picks up the dramatic moments in the fifth installment. One of the major focuses will be the heartbreaking scene of Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Madison's (Caitlin Thompson) unsuccessful wedding.
In the season 5 finale, Madison ditched Kevin right before the ceremony begins. She spent most of her bridal preparation reminiscing the things she's been through, as well as reflecting on not getting an answer from her soon-to-be-husband when she asked him whether she loves her.
Eventually, Madison realized that she cannot marry a man who didn't love her in the first place and called off the wedding. Yet, in a shocking twist, she finally appeared in the flash-forward scene where she serves as one of the bridesmaids to Kate's second wedding.
In addition, Madison and Kevin seemed to be on good terms in the future timeline. In one of the scenes, she can be seen playfully pushing him out of the room. However, their relationship status in the flash-forward remains is unclear as of yet.
This Is Us season 6 is scheduled to premiere in early 2022 on NBC.
