Mass testing is underway in Guangzhou, a city of almost 20 million people and strict lockdown measures are enforced in parts of Liwan - the worst-hit district in China, officials said Wednesday.

China health authorities said nearly 30 million tests were administered in the past two weeks, with 40 positive cases found, the South China Morning Post said.

In the Philippines, health officials said the country had topped the 6 million Covid-19 vaccine shots administered nationwide.

"The Philippines was still able to hit the 6 million mark ahead of its initial target and is expected to gain further momentum in the coming weeks with the arrival of more vaccines," National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief Carlito Galvez Jr., said.

In Malaysia, the country's health care system is overloaded and health authorities are speeding up the pace of immunizations. As of June 8, Malaysia had more than 622,000 cases.

"For the next two months, we will receive approximately 16 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine," The Diplomat quoted Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin as saying.

Over in Singapore, concerns are growing over another wave as central Java and parts of east Java in Indonesia recorded increasing infection numbers in the weeks after increased mobility during the Idul Fitri holidays, the Jakarta Post said.

According to National Pandemic Task Force representative Wiku Adisasmito, Indonesia saw a 15% rise in weekly nationwide cases, the Post reported.

In Thailand, almost 30,000 prison inmates have tested positive in the latest wave of infections, the Thaiger reported.

Thailand has 13,392 active cases at 12 correctional facilities, the Department of Corrections said.
