Kris Wu's rape and sexual assault allegations have shaken the very core of the entertainment industry in China and the government, reportedly, takes the case very seriously. This only means that, if the former EXO member is proven guilty, he will get the punishment he deserves without reservations.
In the South China Morning Post report, the Chinese government, reportedly, wants to set an example with Wu. Thus, it is now thoroughly looking at his case, knowing the idol fans clubs have more influence on the people than the political party itself.
So, in its effort to gain control over these idol fan clubs, it will begin with the Chinese-Canadian actor. Chen Chun, a researcher with a Ph.D., told SCMP that Wu's scandal gave the Chinese authorities further crackdown on fandom.
Lu Pin, a social activist and the NGO Feminist Voice found, added the fandom is harmless and apolitical. But, the government did not want pluralism to work in society. It wanted to make sure it has control over everyone.
Meanwhile, according to The Guardian, the artist's arrest has brought hope that the country's government would finally give attention to the #MeToo movement.
There are many harassment cases in China, varying from abuse to violence against women, that are yet to be addressed due to political censorship. However, since Wu's case involves a big star with several international endorsement deals to his name, it has changed the tide of the game.
State media editorials have been criticizing Wu here and there. His online presence has already been wiped out across social media platforms and streaming services.
Amid all these, this move is still seen as an effort to put down the celebrity culture in the country instead of a step against abuse. In fact, China has recently introduced "new regulations for the entertainment industry and even launched a crackdown on online fan culture."
Though the investigations are still ongoing, sexual assault or rape cases in China, involving underage victims, is a serious crime that can end up with a death verdict if found guilty, All Kpop noted.
To recall, Wu has been an active performer in China since he left EXO. He has already created a big name, but everything went in a downward spiral when he got arrested on July 31 due to alleged sexual assault and rape.
Wu, allegedly, lured his underage-girl victims to his hotel under the pretense that there is a private fan meeting or a company audition happening.
