A mom in Florida was shot dead by one of her own children after her toddler found an unsecured gun inside their home near Orlando. Police said Thursday that the mom was in the middle of a work-related Zoom conference call when she was accidentally shot in the head.

Police said one of the people in the meeting had called 911 after hearing a shot and seeing the woman fall backward to the floor. The woman was identified as 21-year-old Shamaya Lynn from Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Police responded to the 911 call and arrived at an apartment on Spanish Trace Drive. They arrived to see two unattended children and Lynn with a gunshot wound to her head. Paramedics attempted to save Lynn but later pronounced her dead on the scene.

WESH of Orlando first reported the incident, stating that the toddler had picked up a loaded gun left unsecured at the apartment. The gun reportedly belonged to the father of the woman's two young children. Both children were reportedly uninjured.

The case is still under investigation but police believe that the shooting may have just been an unfortunate freak accident. Police are now working with the state attorney's office to determine if the father should face any charges for leaving his firearm unsecured inside their home.

Police Officer Roberto Ruiz Jr. urged the public, during an interview with reporters, to always keep their firearms under lock and key and away from their children. He said tragic accidents like the one in Altamonte Springs could easily be avoided if gun owners act responsibly.

According to the gun-rights activist group Everytown for Gun Safety, there had been at least 369 accidental shooting incidents by children younger than 18 last year. Out of those incidents, 142 were fatal.

In April this year, a 3-year-old boy had shot and killed his 8-month-old brother in Houston. The boy reportedly found the unsecured firearm inside their home. In February, a 25-year-old woman was shot and killed by one of her children, who had found a gun inside her purse.
