Prince Harry's ingrained energy conservation habit, a legacy from his father, King Charles, has been a source of bewilderment for Meghan Markle. King Charles, well-known for his commitment to environmental causes, instilled in his son a penchant for saving energy which Harry now faithfully follows.
In the documentary "Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70," Harry opened up about his father's influence on his eco-friendly practices, especially around saving electricity. He shared, "He's a stickler for turning lights off. And that's now something that I'm obsessed with as well."
Harry's newfound habit, however, has left his wife, Meghan Markle, somewhat perplexed. Harry relayed, "my wife goes 'Well, why turn the lights off? You know it's dark.' I go 'we only need one light, we don't need like six.'" Harry credits his father's influence for shaping these energy-saving habits that he believes everyone can adopt.
King Charles, known for his active role in environmental conservation and shrewdness with expenditures, has even turned his green thumb towards Buckingham Palace. Recently, he initiated energy-saving measures which, although they left the Palace staff shivering, showcased his commitment to sustainability.
According to a source quoted by The Sunday Times, the Palace swimming pool, originally commissioned by King George VI for his daughters Princess Elizabeth and Margaret, experienced a significant temperature drop. The source revealed, "A few people using the pool have noticed that the temperature of the water has dropped... They have been told the King has had the heating turned down."
As part of his environmental strategy, King Charles is keen to reduce the royal household's energy consumption, a priority that he has carried for years. His commitment to sustainable practices extends beyond Buckingham Palace, with the installation of solar panels at his London residence, Clarence House, and his Gloucestershire-based country residence, Highgrove. At Highgrove, he's also established a system to utilize waste water for nurturing the residence's plants and flowers.
Harry's eco-consciousness and King Charles' dedicated environmental stewardship not only highlight the royal family's role in promoting sustainable practices but also give a new spin to the phrase 'like father, like son'.
