Manchester United's recent acquisition, the Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, is reportedly having second thoughts about his decision to join the Old Trafford club, a move that took him away from a trophy-laden journey at Real Madrid.
Casemiro's illustrious nine-year stint at Real Madrid saw him become an integral part of a high-profile midfield trio alongside Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. This formidable partnership was instrumental in helping Los Blancos clinch three La Liga titles and dominate the European scene with five UEFA Champions League trophies.
Last summer, the 31-year-old made headlines with a £70 million move to Manchester United. His arrival was seen as a significant boost for the Red Devils, with Casemiro expected to bring balance, control, and structure to the team. Indeed, in his debut season, he played a pivotal role in ending Manchester United's six-year trophy drought by securing the EFL Cup title. The team also reached the FA Cup final and secured a top-three finish in the Premier League.
Throughout the 2022-23 campaign, Casemiro made 51 competitive appearances, contributing seven goals and seven assists. However, the current season has not been as kind to him. A dip in form, coupled with the arrivals of Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount, has intensified the competition for midfield positions. Kobbie Mainoo's impending return from injury further complicates matters.
Manchester United's performance this season has been less than stellar, with four losses in their first nine league games. Amid these challenges, Spanish media outlet El Nacional reported that Casemiro is ruminating over his decision to leave Real Madrid. This sentiment contrasts sharply with his initial enthusiasm for joining Manchester United. Following a four-goal loss to Brentford in August 2022, Casemiro reportedly texted his agent, asserting, "Tell them I'll fix this." He even reached out to Manchester United's football director, John Murtough, not to express doubts but to convey his eagerness to start his journey in Manchester.
Earlier this year, Casemiro committed to a long-term contract with Manchester United, which will see him at Old Trafford until 2026, with an option for an additional year. Oscar Ribot, Casemiro's agent, emphasized the midfielder's dedication to the club in a recent interview, stating, "Case[miro] has signed for four years plus one. He's come to win titles; this month has been hard, but there's nothing else on his mind."
Unfortunately, an ankle injury sustained during international duty has sidelined Casemiro, causing him to miss Manchester United's recent 2-1 victory over Sheffield United. While he is keen to return to the pitch, he will be absent from the upcoming clash against Copenhagen due to suspension.
As Manchester United navigates its current challenges, the spotlight remains on Casemiro. Will he rise to the occasion and help steer the club back to its winning ways, or will the weight of regret pull him down?
