Four people, ranging in age from 4 to 18, were killed Monday afternoon when a vehicle drove into an after-school camp facility in Chatham, Illinois, authorities said. Several others were injured, with one person airlifted to a hospital for treatment, according to Illinois State Police.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m., when a vehicle crashed through the east side of the YNOT After School Camp building, striking multiple individuals outside before continuing through the structure and exiting via the west wall. State police confirmed that three of the fatalities occurred outside the building, while one victim was struck inside.

The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was hospitalized. Authorities have not indicated whether the crash was intentional, and the incident remains under investigation. This is a "terrible tragedy," the Chatham Police Department said in a statement. "If you believe in the power of prayer, please take a moment to pray right now for the entire Chatham community."

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker stated that he is "closely monitoring" the situation. "Let's wrap our arms around the community tonight as we receive updates on the situation," he posted on social media.

Video footage from the scene showed a large hole in the building, which resembled a gymnasium, and several law enforcement vehicles surrounding the area. A helicopter was seen hovering overhead.

The YNOT After School Camp was launched in 2002 by a Springfield couple with the aim of providing an active and stimulating environment for children during the summer months. A representative for the program did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Chatham, located about 12 miles south of Springfield, has a population of roughly 14,000. Local media outlets, including NBC affiliate WAND, reported that the building struck by the vehicle is located across from a city water tower and park.
