Prince Harry's relationship with the Royal Family is facing renewed scrutiny ahead of his expected return to the United Kingdom, with reports suggesting that planned renovations at Frogmore Cottage have become the latest source of tension between the Duke of Sussex and his relatives.
The controversy comes amid continued speculation about Harry's standing within the family following his departure from royal duties in 2020, the loss of Frogmore Cottage as his U.K. residence, and reports that he was absent from recent family celebrations, including the wedding of Peter Phillips, the son of Princess Anne.
According to reports cited by Closer and The Sun, Frogmore Cottage is scheduled for significant renovation work that would reverse many of the changes made during Harry and Meghan Markle's time living at the property. The claims have not been independently verified by Buckingham Palace or representatives for the Sussexes.
The cottage occupies a unique place in Harry and Meghan's royal history. Queen Elizabeth II gifted the Windsor property to the couple following their 2018 wedding, and it became their official U.K. residence before they relocated to California after stepping back as senior working royals.
Although the couple vacated the property in 2023, reports indicate Harry remains emotionally attached to the home, viewing it as one of the few remaining physical connections to his former life in Britain.
According to Closer, an unnamed source claimed Harry interpreted the reported renovation plans as more than routine maintenance.
"This is a huge slap in the face for Harry," the source told the publication.
The reported renovation project would reportedly remove several custom features installed during the Sussexes' residency and restore the building closer to its earlier configuration. The Sun reported that the property could be divided back into two smaller units, reversing alterations made when it was converted into a larger family home.
The reports arrive at a sensitive time for the Duke of Sussex. Harry has repeatedly spoken about security concerns in the United Kingdom and has suggested that those concerns have complicated efforts to bring Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, back to Britain for family visits.
According to the Closer report, Harry had hoped to continue improving relations with King Charles III before learning of the renovation plans.
"How are they not supposed to take that personally?" the source said, adding that Harry understands the property no longer belongs to him but still feels a strong connection because it was a gift from the late Queen and because he and Meghan had "poured their heart and soul into making it a beautiful home."
The financial investment reportedly made by the couple has also become part of the narrative surrounding the property. Reports noted that Harry and Meghan spent substantial sums customizing the residence, including interior redesign work and specialized features intended to transform the cottage into a long-term family home.
Supporters of the Sussexes argue that removing those modifications could feel symbolic, particularly given the broader deterioration in relations between Harry and the institution he left behind. Critics, however, view the renovation as a practical estate-management decision involving a property that reverted to Crown control after the couple's departure.
