This year's Comic-Con has had its fair share of surprises and controversy. So far, one stands out.

James Gunn, the director who brought the successes forth for "Guardians of the Galaxy" 1 and 2 have come under fire for a series of offensive tweets. At last, according to The Verge, Disney has had enough of it; the latest news has been James Gunn being fired as director of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" on behalf of all the offensive statements he issued between 2009 and 2010.

It is not known exactly what it is that Gunn tweeted. However, there is a collection of screenshots that conspiracy theorist Mike Cernovich posted that shows the alleged tweets. In some of it, Gunn makes fun posts about a few movies, but inadvertently includes pedophilia references in it as well as some references to molestation.

It was enough for Disney to put down the hammer. Gunn, however, has garnered some support in the form of his Hollywood compatriots, mainly the cast of his supposed to be the upcoming movie. Dave Bautista has tweeted his support. Actress Selma Blair, then since created a Change.org petition which, CNN points out, urges Disney to re-hire the director. Zoe Saldana and Chris Pratt indirectly referred to the incident in their tweets.

Some of them took an active approach to defend the director. "Rick and Morty" co-creator Justin Roiland defended the director's actions as 'past' and that thing has then since changed. Patton Oswalt, meanwhile, pointed out whistleblower Mike Cernovich was no saint himself, presenting a re-tweet showing Cernovich using the same style of reference he pointed Gunn out for.

With this, Collider weighs in on what the series of events means for Disney and the industry moving forward.

While James Gunn may indeed be wrong, it is pointed out that he has shown the capacity to change. It also sets the precedent that past actions may come back to haunt you even if you've changed. In the case of James Gunn, the consequences are dire, but it dispels the fact that he's not the same person before and erases his remorse.

James Gunn has since then come out with a tweet on July 19th, detailing his 'sordid' past and his turning a new leaf over since then.
