One variant of the Xiaomi Mi 8 line is set to come out this month in the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition. It is one of the three variants from the clan, a version that comes with a see-through glass back, a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint scanner and a 3D face unlock option.

Globemobiles.com shared that the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer will start selling on July 30 at 7:30 a.m. for around $542. The variant offers some impressive specs, but the problem lies in the number of units that will be provided.

Xiaomi did not divulge how many units they have in stock although the belief is that these will be in limited quantities and only in China. There is no official word yet on whether the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer would be available globally or not.

Before worrying about how to get one, it would be best to skim down the specs the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer has to offer. Up front, the device will sport a 6.21-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display (2,480 x 1080 pixels) that is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5, according to the detailed specs listed by  GSM Arena.

It will rely on an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, an Andreno 630 GPU, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of ROM. It will not come with provisions for expanded memory via microSD card, comes with a non-removable Li-Ion 3,000 mAh battery and comes loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

As far as the built-in cameras, it comes with a dual 12 MP camera and a 20 MP front-facing shooter. It is dual-SIM ready and weighs just 177 grams. For a device that costs roughly $500, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition is looming as a good buy.

There are a couple of interesting advanced specs to look forward to in the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition. One is the 3D face-scanning feature, which most may have probably associated with the iPhone X. Thanks to infrared light, potential users can make a 3D map of their face and set a more accurate way of securing the device and aid in taking great selfies.

The other feature is the in-display fingerprint scanner which most may have already seen on other devices like the Vivo X21. Thanks to the pressure-sensitive display, the phone will only scan a user’s fingers when they press down the screen. It addresses concerns on the frequency of scanning for fingerprints that could drain up the battery, Android Authority reported.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer it a tempting buy and most would want to get one. The only problem is how to get one, the availability constraint that the Chinese phone manufacturer has been notorious for.
