An ill-fated movie with Kevin Spacey in it but not in the starring role recorded the worst ever opening weekend in Hollywood history. Needless to say, the movie was a tremendous flop at the U.S. box office.
The Billionaire Boys Club, a movie shot years before Spacey became the target of many sexual assault charges, made only $126 on its opening day on Aug.18. It made another $162 the next day for a two-day take of $288, wrote The Hollywood Reporter.
This movie where Spacey only plays a supporting role will find it tough making more than $425 once the whole weekend is taken into account. The Hollywood Reporter said the abysmal ticket sales came to about $53 per each of the eight theaters. This works out to an average of six tickets sold at each location across from Friday to Sunday.
The movie is playing in eight theaters across the U.S., none of which is in a key city such as Los Angeles and New York. Metro Movies 12 in Middletown, Connecticut came out the top earned on Friday with $45. As can be expected, the Billionaire Boys Club is now the lowest-ever opening box office for a movie with Spacey in it.
In contrast, Spacey's previous movie, Baby Driver, released in 2017 had Spacey in the starring role and made more than $20 million at the box office in its opening weekend.
Spacey, 59, played only a small, supporting role in the movie, said Vertical Entertainment, distributor of the Billionaire Boys Club. The film stars Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) and Taron Egerton (Kingsman) with Emma Roberts, Cary Elwes, Judd Nelson and Billie Lourd in supporting roles.
Actor Anthony Rapp in October 2017 accused Spacey of making a sexual advance toward him when he was only 14 years old. After only a few days, many other men also alleged that Spacey either sexually harassed or assaulted them.
Spacey was fired by Netflix from the last season of the House of Cards and was replaced from another movie just six weeks before it was released in the wake of the sexual assault allegations. He was to play Gore Vidal in a new Netflix movie, but this film was later canceled.
Spacey was also the star in All the Money in the World, a movie directed by Ridley Scott's film. After the sexual assault allegations against began piling up, Spacey was fired and all his scenes were cut from the film. Veteran actor Christopher Plummer replaced Spacey in the deleted scenes His entertainment projects have all but dried up.
Vertical Entertainment said earlier this year it was unaware of the "distressing allegations" of sexual assault against Spacey when it produced the movie in 2016. It said it hopes audiences make up their own minds about reprehensible allegations against one person, but not at the expense of the entire cast and crew of this film.
