In a bid to make its stake in the health care sector, Amazon Inc. has hired one of the country's top cardiologists.
According to the New York Post, the Jeff Bezos-led firm has tapped on the medical expertise of Maulik Majmudar.
Majmudar is a fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and has spent time at Harvard University's Medical School.
In a Twitter post on Monday, the renowned cardiologist announced his new role for the multi-billion e-commerce company. In his statement, the former associate director for health-care transformation in MGH said that he is now moving to "an exciting and challenging role" at Amazon.
Majmudar is no stranger to corporate stints with tech companies such as Amazon. In the past, the doctor served as an adviser to Quanttus on its failed project that tries to track blood pressure by only using a wrist device.
Both Majmudar and the Seattle, Washington-based tech company have yet to specify the medical practioner's exact job, although it is unlikely that Amazon will dish out this kind of information given that it prefers to keep mum when it comes to corporate details.
What is known though is Amazon's clear intent to set its roots in the field of healthcare and medicine? In June, the company announced its plans to buy the online pharmacy PillPack. One of its competitors in the bid is Walmart which is also eyeing to take hold of the medicine firm.
PillPack is known for its convenient medication management system services which include packaging, organizing and delivery done all over the country with just the click of a button.
Should this acquisition plan goes through, analysts expect that it will definitely help catapult Amazon into the pharmacy business.
Even more so, Amazon collaborated with investment titans Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase in a yet to be named joint venture aimed at reducing the health care costs of corporate workers. This recent project saw the earlier inclusion of celebrity surgeon and author, Atul Gawande, as its CEO.
Apparently, Majmudar won't be the only health and medicine expert changing lanes and going into technology-driven health services.
CNBC reported that cardiologists are some of the most sought-after professionals by tech companies venturing into the healthcare industry. Facebook, for example, has tapped on Freddy Abnousi for its health-care services. Meanwhile, Google's sister company Verily, which focuses on life sciences and research, nabbed Jessica Mega as its chief medical officer.
