Jimmy Butler has requested for a trade with three teams in mind – the Brooklyn Nets, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the New York Knicks. Although most people are aware of what he can do, some are still puzzled at why these are three teams he prefers.

One reason is obviously the money he stands to get. Butler made public his intention to opt out and test free agency next year. He stands to get a max pay of $140.6 million for over four years. Staying with the Timberwolves would net him $189.7 million although this would be for a five-year spread, ESPN said.

But aside from the money and security, Butler is also looking at the situation of other teams. Aware that he cannot do it alone, the aforementioned teams do have enough to sign another max contract player. In a way, it seems that the 29-year-old wants to play alongside someone who earns about the same much and likewise hungry for an NBA title.

The Clippers are reportedly his preferred place of destination of the three. Ironically, it is the same ballclub that has been linked to Kawhi Leonard as detailed in a separate post. Looking at the scenarios broadly, it seems that there is a common element. Both Butler and Leonard seem to be steering clear of LeBron James.

There is no official explanation if such is true although most believe this has more to do of either playing in the shadow of King James. All play the forward position although the 33-year-old can play any. Such a scenario would make any team an immediate contender, the same path other super teams did in the past.

For Butler, it may have something to do of wanting to be the top dog. There is talk that he had differences with the young Timberwolves – Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns – although Shams Charania alleges that this has little to do with the swingman’s request for a trade.

Regardless, the decision of Butler to avoid playing alongside, or behind the shadow, of James is similar to the outlook of Leonard and Paul George. All have been linked to the Lakers and the landscape totally changed when LeBron decided to take his act to Hollywood, SB Nation said.

Butler, George, and Leonard are young and rising stars out to prove that they can cement their legacy without having to play second fiddle. Some may consider it foolish or selfish although the thought of seeing players come into their own without relying on someone else is an achievement that can become beneficial in the long run.
