Multinational engineering and construction firm Flour recently confirmed that the company's BSAF automotive coating plant in China received an Award of Merit during the 2018 Global Best Projects Awards. The award was bestowed by the Engineering News-Record magazine. The project was recognized under the Power/Industrial category and it was completed safely, under budget, and on time.

In a statement released to the public, Fluor Energy and Chemicals Business in Asia-Pacific president Sandeep Nibber said that the Chinese project exemplifies the company's resolute creativity and commitment to all its projects. The state-of-the-art BSAF facility is expected to play a key role in the booming automotive market in China and its neighboring region, especially the Asia Pacific. Mr. Nibber also extended its acknowledgments to Engineering News-Record for recognizing the company's achievement.

With regards to the BSAF project, Fluor provided all front-end engineering and design to the facility. On top of that, Fluor was also responsible for the procurement, engineering, and construction management of the project. The project is an expansion of the existing BSAF facility.

During the peak of its 15-month construction schedule, Fluor managed more than 1,200 workers. Despite this massive construction and managerial undertaking, both BSAF and Fluor managed to maintain their high-quality standards. By working side-by-side with the existing operating facility, both BSAF and Fluor teams were able to complete the expansion way ahead of schedule and with no disruption to current operations.

In order to maintain quality, Fluor instituted its team to follow a strict regimen of daily safety meetings, safety observations, as well as hazard and identification and mitigation training.

BSAF's new production facility is slated to produce primers, thinners, waterborne basecoats, and clear coats. All of the facility's products will be sold to the growing Chinese automotive manufacturing market.

Engineering News-Record selects winners based on various parameters. Chief among these are innovations, safety performance, design, and construction quality, and challenges bested. The award focuses on various engineering projects that are global in nature.

The October 1 issue of Engineering News-Record featured Fluor's project team that helped on the BSAF project. The team was also honored at the subsequent awards ceremony that took place on October 2 in New York City.
