Klay Thompson made headlines in record-setting fashion following his 52-point performance for the Golden State Warriors against the Chicago Bulls. While those numbers will go down the record books, the 14 three-pointers he sank at the United Center is something only a special group of players have achieved.
Thompson, often overlooked with the attention mostly centered on Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, knew that the law of averages would soon catch up. And that night apparently came with Curry, Durant and Draymond Green cheering him on, ESPN said.
For Thompson, it was the 3rd time that he has scored at least 50 in a game and 11th time scoring at least 40 points. Also, it was the fourth time that Thompson has scored at least 30 points in a half.
As far as the Warriors are concerned, it was the third time in as many games that a player put on a sizzling offensive display. Curry was the first when he racked up 51 points against the Washington Wizards while Durant had that 25-point fourth quarter explosion against the New York Knicks. Could there be a fourth coming soon?
Looking at the Golden State roster, it will not be surprised if anyone else comes up with a scoring splurge. In fact, Curry, Durant or even Thompson can come up with another offensive performance once they find their scoring groove.
Regardless of who among the Dubs has the hot hand, the fact that teammates are there to back the one on fire is something that makes them special. Curry, who previously held the record with 13 three-pointers which he accomplished back in 2016 against the New Orleans Pelicans, was one of the players who actually egged Thompson to go for it, CBS Sports said. And so he did.
"Records are obviously meant to be broken," Curry said. "I'm just happy it's my teammate and nobody else. And I got to witness it in person."
Thompson was thankful to have gotten over the slump. Prior to their game against the Bulls, Thompson had only made just five of 36 three-point attempts on the year. Known to be the shooter that he is, that is uncanny for a player of his caliber.
The Warriors face the Pelicans on Wednesday where defensive adjustments are likely to be made. Thompson hopes to carry on the torrid shooting display and will be looking for an encore. Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry will have his work cut out for him against Golden State as he tries to figure out who will come in locked and loaded.
