Nicole Kidman (Celeste Wright) expects that HBO will air "Big Little Lies" season 2 this June. The critically-acclaimed series, which also stars Reese Witherspoon (Madeline Mackenzie), Shailene Woodley (Jane Chapman), Zoe Kravitz (Bonnie Carlson) and Laura Dern (Renata Klein), wrapped up filming at the end of summer in 2018 and things have been coming together in the editing room since.
The actress confirmed the premiere date of "Big Little Lies" season 2 when she was on CNN's "New Year's Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen" last Dec. 31. Kidman made a surprise appearance on the special and told the hosts that it looks like HBO will debut the new season this coming summer.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting the airing of "Big Little Lies" season 2, especially after HBO announced the casting of Meryl Streep. The Oscar-winning superstar will play Mary Louise Wright, Celeste's mother-in-law, who will question the accidental death of her son, Perry (played by Alexander Skarsgård) at the end of season 1.
Kidman, who won a Golden Globe Best Actress in 2018 for playing Celeste, said that the show deserved someone of Streep's caliber to shake things up for the second season. Kidman also said that the consequences of what happened in the first season would be heavy for their characters, so they needed someone like Streep to help see the story through.
The actress admitted in an interview with Variety that she was terrified to be working next to Streep. But at the same time, everyone didn't want to look like amateurs next to one of the greatest actresses of all time, so they were pushed to deliver their best performances as well.
"Big Little Lies," which is based on the book of the same name from author Liane Moriarty, was originally going to be a one-off series. There wasn't any plan to do a second season when the cast and crew were filming the first one, but HBO decided to renew the series because of the positive response from viewers and critics.
Moriarty was then commissioned to write the story for "Big Little Lies" season 2 along with executive producer David E. Kelley. As with the first season, the second season will also have seven episodes.
But Kidman also told Variety that there would likely be no more season 3 in the works when "Big Little Lies" season 2 completes its run on HBO. She emphasized that it would be hard to get the cast back together for a third time with their busy schedules and other commitments.
Meanwhile, HBO hasn't made an official announcement for the premiere of the second season. However, a summer premiere for "Big Little Lies" season 2 seems to fit the schedule since the cable network will have "Game of Thrones" in the spring and "True Detective" in the late fall.
