"His Dark Materials" is an upcoming fantasy series from BBC and HBO. Featuring "Logan" breakthrough star Dafne Keen as the young heroine Lyra Belacqua, the show wrapped up production of the first season last December 2018.
But while the networks have not yet announced exactly when the show will debut on the small screen, BBC confirmed "His Dark Materials" for a second season a few months before the filming finished. The show is going to get another run even as no episodes have aired and the networks are still now sure how the viewing public will respond to the series adaptation.
Now, it seems work on "His Dark Materials" season 2 is slowly underway. A post on the Twitter profile Bad Wolf TV showed that the series is looking for a season 2 script editor. Bad Wolf is the production outfit of BBC One.
"His Dark Materials" will take points from the trilogy: "The Northern Lights" (also known as "The Golden Compass"), "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass." Pullman published these stories, which have this Victoriana theme, from 1995 to 2000.
Director Otto Bathurst revealed that the TV adaptation would have a different feel compared to the original book sources in that it will be "more accessible" to today's generation of viewers. Bathurst, however, don't want to reveal much about the series and, like the rest of the cast and crew, he's avoiding leaking spoilers on the Internet.
Aside from Keen, "His Dark Materials" will also star James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby and Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter. Also in the cast are Clarke Peters as Dr. Carne, Ian Gelder as the scholar Charles, Will Keen as Father MacPhail, Anne-Marie Duff as Ma Costa, Georgina Campbell as Adele Starminster and Ariyon Bakare as Lord Boreal.
Miranda told Variety that viewer anticipating "His Dark Materials" in the U.S. might be able to watch the series on HBO by the end of 2019. However, viewers in the U.K. may likely watch the show a few months ahead, as BBC will premiere it first.
In 2007, Hollywood adapted the first book of "His Dark Materials" as a big screen flick with Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter, Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel and Dakota Blue Richards as Lyra. "The Golden Compass," however, failed to click with fans and the reception was a mixed bag. Thus, a follow-up movie, which had been the original plan, never made it to production.
