Following her devastating Brexit deal defeat on Tuesday, Theresa May has been saved by rebel Tory MPs who helped her win a vote of no confidence on Wednesday evening.
According to BBC, Tory MPs and the DUP voted in favor of May, allowing her to win by 325 to 306. This means May will keep her post at No 10.
After surviving the no-confidence vote, May met with Plaid Cymru and Lib Dem leaders. Unfortunately, she didn't speak with Labour Party head Jeremy Corbyn, who tabled the no-confidence vote after the historical event that took place on Tuesday.
"I am disappointed that the leader of the Labour Party has not so far chosen to take part, but our door remains open," May said.
Analysts believe Corbyn's decisions are driven by his desire to see May in agreement of a Brexit deal that is founded on a managed process. It appears that Corbyn will not take part in any discussions until he gets what he wants from May.
Despite her loss, May believes she still has to finish what she started. "I believe it is my duty to deliver on the British people's instruction to leave the European Union and I intend to do so," she explained.
Some political analysts expressed confusion over the Commons' decision to give May another chance at keeping her office. In the history of a sitting government, this is the first time the Commons handed out a verdict as shattering as the one May received on Tuesday. Ironically, the same MPs showed support for the defeated Prime Minister's government.
While May's win on the confidence vote has given her government another shot, The Guardian noted that there are only 72 days left before the Brexit deal is supposed to take effect.
Now that May's Brexit deal has been rejected, there is a fair chance the U.K. will walk out of the EU with no deal. Most MPs have previously stated that they don't want a "no-deal" for Britain's exit. However, the decision to oust May's Brexit offer contradicts their statements.
May has reiterated that she will keep reaching out to other MPs to come up with better options in case her withdrawal agreement gets reinstated before time runs out. Experts suggest that it is best for May to focus on settlements with opposing MPs who were unhappy with her recommendations. If she refuses to compromise, Brexit pushes through, with no deal, and partnered with potential issues that will be hard to resolve in the future.
Britain is scheduled to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019.
