The planned "Cleopatra" reboot is drawing a lot of talk on the internet. Fans are now saying that the upcoming movie should star Beyonce because the award-winning singer's appearance would look more authentic than Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga who were rumored to be competing for the role.
According to Vox, actresses who played Cleopatra in the past have all been Caucasians, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh, and Claudette Colbert. But actual archeological finds tied to Cleopatra, whom historians say was of Greek ethnicity, showed that her mother might have been likely African.
Thus, if the real Queen of the Nile didn't look completely European and was of mixed-race, fans believe that Hollywood should choose a woman of color to lead the reboot. Otherwise, the film would be criticized for whitewashing the role.
Now, there are strong calls for the upcoming movie to cast Beyonce as Cleopatra. It's not hard to imagine her in the role since Beyonce has given nods to Egyptian queens in her work.
Beyonce's character in the 2006 film "Dreamgirls" was even up for the role of Cleopatra in one of the storylines. Fans believe that she's the best actress for the part, but there are also other people saying Rihanna, or Priyanka Chopra, or Jennifer Lopez could be Cleopatra.
Sony has been planning to reboot the 1963 movie "Cleopatra" since 2010. The film, which sealed Taylor's status as one of the most unforgettable actresses of all time, has been touted as an Angelina Jolie flick.
But there are unconfirmed reports from OK! Magazine saying Lady Gaga might just snatch the role from the "Maleficent" actress after she made waves with critics for "A Star is Born." Lady Gaga felt she's ready to tackle a big role like Cleopatra after proving her ability on the big screen with Bradley Cooper.
But it's still unclear where the development of "Cleopatra" is at this point. Different directors were once attached to the project, such as Paul Greengrass, James Cameron, David Fincher, and Ang Lee.
In 2013, Lee expressed that he'd like to do the movie after Fincher dropped out. Lee also said that he had gotten the script, but nothing came out of the project after the director met with Sony.
The updated "Cleopatra" film is supposed to be based on a book written by Stacy Schiff. Producer Scott Rudin described the film as a revisionist version, where Cleopatra is more of a political strategist and not a seductress.
