Marvel Studios is reportedly considering Black Widow stand-alone movie to be its first R-rated movie. Although it is not yet confirmed, That Hashtag Show's Charles Murphy posted via Twitter over the weekend he reportedly heard Marvel discussing whether or not to make Black Widow an R-rated adventure, starring Scarlett Johansson.
While it's unsure, Murphy reportedly heard Disney has recently said that R-rated MCU films ARE a possibility, adding: "So if BW ends up R-rated, don't be shocked." The blogger was referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger's statement on an investor's conference call back in December, where he noted it's possible to have R-rated Marvel brand as long as audiences know what's coming, the Daily Mail reported.
Here's something I don't think I've ever talked about. When I first heard they were developing the Black Widow film, I also heard they were discussing whether or not to make it Marvel Studios first R-rated film. — Charles Murphy (@CharlesMurphTHS) January 12, 2019
Scarlett Johansson will return as Black Widow. She has already played in six movies following her MCU debut in Iron Man 2 back in 2010. The actress starred in The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). There have already been discussions of Black Widow stand-alone movie over the past years, and the studio is now finally moving forward. The movie will reportedly be released this coming 2020.
Even before Marvel confirmed there would be a stand-alone Black Widow film, Johansson already hinted last year in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres that she believes there's a room for a movie. The actress said there could be something really special on the way, noting the character has a tortured past and has made a lot of difficult decisions. She added the character experience a lot of trauma, and she's got issues.
Meanwhile, some fans think considering R-rating for Black Widow movie isn't a good idea. First, a lot of young children love the superheroine, but they couldn't watch the movie on cinemas because of its rating. It is indeed a bold movie for Marvel and fans are debating whether they're ready for more profanity, nudity and a darker turn in the MCU. But, others agreed that the R-rating would allow for the rough backstory of Black Widow's character to be given justice.
Although this would be the first R-rating movie for Marvel, many superhero films have already received such rating, like Deadpool 2. The upcoming Suicide Squad spin-off Birds Of Prey and Joker movies will reportedly receive the adult certificate as well.
