Nearly 200,000 people have signed the petition to bring Marvel's "Daredevil" back on air for season 4. The show's star, Charlie Cox (Daredevil/Matt Murdoch), did not hide his disappointment over the decision to end the series even when it was doing well on the streaming platform Netflix.
The Save Daredevil campaign has been gaining steam since fans launched the petition more than two months ago. Avid viewers of the superhero series called on Netflix, Marvel and Marvel's parent site, Disney, to reconsider having the series back since "Daredevil" was supposed to start filming the fourth season before the streaming platform decided to drop the bomb last November 2018.
The move to end the show was so unexpected that even the stars were shocked to learn "Daredevil" won't be getting a fourth season. In an interview with Comicbook, Cox admitted he felt disappointment, anger and sadness over losing the series.
Cox also said that while he's extremely grateful for the online petition and the overwhelming support from the fans, he's also careful not to get his hopes up. Ultimately, the decision to have a "Daredevil" season 4 will still be up to the people in charge in the studios.
Reports have it that Netflix dropped "Daredevil" because Disney/Marvel will soon launch its own streaming platform, called Disney+, as Netflix's direct competitor. Cox told the press that he's not privy to the deals between the studios and he's also not sure if "Daredevil" might get a new life on Disney+. As with the chances of the online petition, Cox also doesn't want to assume Disney+ will have a place for "Daredevil" season 4 in the future.
Disney executive Kevin Mayer, however, stated that "Daredevil" and the rest of the Marvel shows Netflix canceled, such as "Luke Cage" and "Iron Fist," might see the light of day in the studio's new streaming service. Mayer told The Hollywood Reporter that these productions are "high-quality" so it's not easy to discount them from the Disney+ line-up.
But according to Variety, there's a clause in the contract between Disney/Marvel and Netflix that prohibits TV shows from returning on air two years after its cancellation. So, if Disney+ decides to bring back "Daredevil," the closest date for production to start would be in late 2020.
Meanwhile, Netflix subscribers can still keep watching the first three seasons of "Daredevil" on the streaming platform. Apparently, those episodes will not be removed from the library, as it stands for now.
