The fate of "Lethal Weapon" season 4 remains on shaky ground. After lead star Damon Wayans (Roger Martaugh) announced that he's no longer going to be part of the series as of December 2018, it seems the buddy cop show could be preparing to wrap up.

Wayans, 58, confirmed last October that he's on his way out after "Lethal Weapon" season 3. He reasoned that, like his character, he's too old to be working on a show that demanded 16 hours a day of this time.

To date, the current season still has three remaining episodes to air. Until then, no one knows what will happen to the series now that its two original lead stars are gone.

Last May 2018, "Lethal Weapon" had to dismiss Wayans' co-star Clay Crawford (Martin Riggs) because of complaints about his behavior on the set. FOX brought it Seann Williams Scott (Wesley Cole) before "Lethal Weapon" season 3 started its run to save the show.

However, as the new co-lead alongside Wayans, Scott's presence has not helped the series get a bump in the ratings as the show is down 30 percent in viewers compared to season 2. Still, there's still a possibility that the show could be renewed despite its bumpy year.

So, if FOX grants "Lethal Weapon" a fourth season, will Wayans likely return for a cameo in future episodes? Cinema Blend pointed out that it's still possible for his character to be part of the show if his TV family is still going to be in it.

After all, Wayans' TV wife Keesha Sharp (Trish Martaugh) previously expressed that "Lethal Weapon" can still thrive even without the original stars. Presumably, Wayan's character won't be killed off in the third season finale.

At this point, however, there's still no official word on the status of "Lethal Weapon" season 4. FOX will likely make an announcement around April or May.

In the meantime, "Lethal Weapon" season 3 will return with new episodes on Tuesday, Feb. 5, after the long holiday break. The new episode will have Cole and Martaugh investigating the California Border Patrol after a Mexican father and daughter tried to cross the border.

Meanwhile, Trish will finally launch her campaign as the district attorney but the media will uncover her past secrets. Cole will also have to face his past when he experiences a series of flashbacks that will result in a health risk.

The episode, titled "Coyote Ugly," will have Kevin Rahm (Capt. Brooks Avery), Michelle Mitchenor (Det. Bailey), Jonathan Fernandez (Scorsese), Dante Brown (Roger Jr) and Chandler Kinney (Rianna Murtaugh). Guest stars Maggie Lawson (Natalie), Shay Rudolph (Maya), Paolo Lazaro (Gutierrez) and Evan Hover as the 18-year-old Cole are also going to be featured in the episode.
