"You" on Netflix could potentially go on for season 3. Co-creator Sera Gamble revealed that they are mapping out some plans even as the second season has not yet started filming.
The series about a stalker-boyfriend/serial killer has also not yet gotten a third season renewal from the streaming platform. But, Gamble told Cosmopolitan that the show can absolutely return for more stories as they have been excitedly brainstorming about it in the writers' room.
Gamble said that she is hopeful for a third season renewal. However, its fate will still be up to Netflix and how the show's second season will perform on the streaming platform once it's launched.
"You" has been renewed for a second season 2 on Lifetime before the first season even debuted on the network last September. However, by December 2018, Netflix picked up the show from its former cable home to become a Netflix exclusively original series.
"You" is based on a novel written by Caroline Kepnes with Gamble and Greg Berlanti as the TV show creators. It follows a young man named Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), who works as a bookstore manager in New York. He encounters Beck (Elizabeth Lail), an aspiring writer, and grows obsessed with her. Soon, Joe starts stalking Beck and eventually wins her heart.
But in winning her heart, Joe had to eliminate the people in Beck's life because he saw them as threats to their relationship. Thus, Joe ends killing three people just to have Beck in his life by the end of the first season.
Adding more confusion and mystery to "You" is the fact that Joe is haunted by memories of his former girlfriend. A year before meeting Beck, Candace (Ambyr Childers) apparently ghosted everyone in her life, including Joe, but there were also stories going around that Joe murdered her.
But "You" season 1 ended with Candace making her surprise appearance in the final moments. She's alive and well but she has unfinished business with her ex-boyfriend.
"You" season 2 will see Joe uprooting his life from New York to Los Angeles, Gamble told TV Line. The plot will take points from Kepnes' second book in the series, "Hidden Bodies," but Gamble said the TV adaptation will be slightly different from the book version.
Badgely will, of course, return to reprise his role as Joe. Childers is also expected to be back for "You" season 2. The producers also hinted that there are still more stories to tell from Dr. Nicky (John Stamos), whom Joe framed for another murder. Joe's neighbors, Paco and his mom, may also return.
"You" season 1 remains streaming on Netflix. The second season has no launch date as of press time.
