Disney will soon give a glimpse of what the new series based on "High School Musical" will be about this coming April. The studio is set to mark its Disney Investor Day on this month to launch Disney+, the new online streaming platform that will run its new and original programs.
According to the press release, the company is expected to show first look clips of its original content on the Disney+ platform to potential investors on April 11, 2019. First on the list is the "High School Musical" TV series but the studio is also expected to show videos from the "Star Wars" spinoff "The Mandalorian," the live-action movie "Lady and the Tramp," and the Marvel spinoff series about Loki, which will feature Tom Hiddleston.
The series iteration of "High School Musical" was announced in October 2018 with young actor Joshua Bassett ("Stuck in the Middle") as the lead star. He'll play Ricky, a charming junior who thinks he can win back his girlfriend if he also joins their school's production of the 2006 TV movie "High School Musical."
Tentatively titled "High School Musical: The Musical," the show will play out like a documentary series similar to "The Office." The cameras will follow Ricky and the rest of the cast as they mount their production of the beloved movie that launched the careers of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale.
Disney, however, has not yet announced who will join Bassett in the series. Aside from Ricky, the story will also include characters like the rising star Nina, her new boyfriend E.J., Ricky's best friend Big Red, the bold Ashyn, the princess brat Gina, the student choreographer Vikram and teacher Jenn. The original stars of "High School Musical" are not expected to have cameos.
According to The Salt Lake Tribune, "High School Musical: The Musical" will return to East High School for filming beginning February up to July. The report also stated that the show would likely debut on Disney+ by the second half of the year.
Two more installments were released for "High School Musical" after Disney launched the TV movie over 13 years ago. "High School Musical 2" came out in 2007 and was followed up by "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" with the original cast intact.
In 2016, Disney announced the development of the fourth installment, tentatively called "High School Musical 4." The casting was underway until Disney announced its plans to do a TV show for Disney+ instead.
