Meizu not only beat Vivo to the punch when the former announced the Zero, but it also took a huge swing against tech giants Apple and Samsung. The Zero, Meizu's latest flagship killer, has achieved something that no other smartphone manufacturers have - to produce a mobile phone that really is wireless.
According to the Meizu's official website, the Meizu Zero is the world's first mobile phone that doesn't have any discernable buttons or holes on it. It doesn't have a headphone jack, a USB-C charging phone, speakers, and SIM card slot. However, it does have two pinholes: one for the microphone and the other is for hard resets.
Without the holes usually found in smartphones, it is not surprising to know that the Zero is dust and water-resistant. It has IP68 certification which means that it is rated for deep sea diving and can survive for 30 minutes under water.
Without any charging port or USB port, the Meizu Zero is compatible with Bluetooth 5.0 and a wireless USB connectivity. It means that the Meizu will have the ability to connect to other devices, such as computers, using the Wireless USB technology. Meizu also claims that the wireless transfer speed would be comparable to file transfers using a standard USB 3.0.
To make the smartphone a truly wireless device, the Meizu Zero will reportedly come with its own wireless charger. It will also include support for 18W fast wireless charging. Meizu also claims that they found a way to significantly reduce the heat generation during charging.
Since the mobile device has no speakers, the Zero will be equipped with Meizu's mSound 2.0 in-screen sound technology. This means that the 5.99-inch QHD OLED screen will replace the traditional speakers.
Without physical buttons, the Zero utilizes an in-display fingerprint sensor and a "Virtual Side Button" that would allow users to turn their phones on and off, or adjust the volume. The Meizu Zero is also equipped with Meizu's mEngine 2.0 haptic engine to provide the users with tactile feedback while using the virtual buttons.
These features seem too good to be true. Assuming, of course, that Meizu has finally delivered a smartphone that the likes of Apple and Samsung are still developing, then the Zero would be an instant hit.
However, as noteworthy as these features are, there are still some disadvantages. The Meizu Zero will likely not be available outside China, or at least, not for the time being. This is simply because the Meizu Zero Zero doesn't have a SIM card slot.
The Meizu Zero will likely utilize an embedded SIM or an eSIM technology to make up for the lack of the SIM card slot. According to Endgaget, the Zero would be launched in China via a tie-up with local carriers. It is safe to assume that the availability of this ultra high-tech smartphone would be limited at first.
The battle for smartphone supremacy has just gotten more interesting with the impending arrival of the Meizu Zero. The Meizu Zero is designed with the future in mind - combining user-insight, technological trend, and design trend, to come up with the world's first smartphone that not only doesn't have any holes or buttons, but it really is a wireless device in every sense of the word.
