"Fast and Furious" producer and star Vin Diesel has announced the development of another spinoff. After leading in eight films of the billion-dollar franchise, the actor said that they are working on an all-women line-up with some noteworthy female writers who did the screenplay for "Captain Marvel."
In a post on Instagram, Diesel welcomed Nicole Perlman ("Captain Marvel" and "Black Widow"), Lindsey Beer ("Silver Sable" and "Sierra Burgess Is a Loser"), and Geneva Robertson-Dworet ("Captain Marvel" and "Tomb Raider") to the project. The ladies from Marvel will be developing the story of the chick version of "Fast and Furious," where Michelle Rodriguez is expected to lead and reprise her role as Letty. It's still unclear, however, if former "Fast and Furious" female stars like Eva Mendes, Helen Mirren, Nathalie Emmanuel, Charlize Theron, and Gal Gadot would also join the all-women project since the script has yet to be written.
In 2017, Rodriguez expressed the limitations given to women's role in the "Fast and Furious" franchise. She hinted in her sentiments that she might just walk away if the female characters are not given much importance in succeeding movies.
Rodriguez was part of five of eight "Fast and Furious" films, and she was also in the original movie before it blew up at the box office. She acknowledged in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the franchise always had this macho vibe since it kicked off in 2001. However, she's hoping that things might change.
The all-women "Fast and Furious" spinoff is one of three projects Diesel is mounting with Universal Studios. The first announced spinoff, "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw," is in the middle of production with stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, and Vanessa Kirby. "John Wick" director David Leitch is behind the camera and this movie has been marked for an August 2019 release. The third spinoff, on the other hand, has not yet been announced.
Meanwhile, Diesel also confirmed that "Fast and Furious 9" will start filming in February in London. He confirmed that Rodriquez would be in this new installment as well, but other details about the movie's plot and casting have not yet been divulged.
Director Justin Lin is expected to also return the franchise. He has helmed more than half the movies in "Fast and Furious" and was instrumental to its box office success. "Fast and Furious 9" has an April 2020 release schedule.
