"The Witcher" on Netflix is not going to hold back on the sex, gore, and violence. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich teased that she has already seen some early cuts to the series starring Henry Cavill as the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia.
Hissrich posted on Twitter that "The Witcher" on Netflix will not be ideal for viewing with a 5-year-old. However, this doesn't come as a surprise for fans of the book series turned video game. It's one of the main concerns when Netflix first announced the production of the show.
Those who have read the book series from Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski had misgivings that Netflix would deliver a sanitized adaptation of "The Witcher" so that it will click with a larger audience. But the actual content and story in the books have been pretty graphic and shocking.
Its dark and mature themes are not safe for the younger demographic. Fans would be glad to know, therefore, that the series will stay true to the book's adaptations regarding tone and theme.
Netflix has not given the exact date for when the show will start streaming "The Witcher" season 1 on its platform. What's certain for now is that there will be eight episodes with a high potential for a multi-season arc.
According to insiders close to Cavill, Netflix is quite happy with the quality of the adaptation of "The Witcher" that the season could get a renewal even before its debut. This means that the actor may be tied to the show longer than expected. Thus, there have been speculations he won't be able to return to do more films as Superman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
Meanwhile, "The Witcher" also stars Freya Allan (Ciri), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), Jodhi May (Queen Calanthe), Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson (Eist), Adam Levy (Mousesack), MyAnna Buring (Aretuza) and Millie Brady (Princess Renfri), Alex Garcia Lopez, Alik Sakharov, and Charlotte Brändström are rotating director duties.
Filming "The Witcher" is taking place in Hungary since October 2018. Brändström, however, also revealed that the show would be filming scenes at the Canary Island in Spain.
"The Witcher" centers on Geralt. As a monster hunter or witcher, he does not only have the physical prowess; he's also got supernatural powers developed and honed at a young age. Witchers like Geralt need to be strong to kill deadly beasts. But what Geralt has learned is that the humans are more beastly than the monsters he has to hunt.
The world Sapkowski created in the books has reached a cult following in many European countries. But "The Witcher" gained a worldwide following because of the video game.
