Anne Hathaway has confirmed that the script is ready for "Princess Diaries 3." This means that the long-awaited follow-up to the Disney movie, which was released in 2001 and 2004, could head to production soon.

Hathaway, who starred as Mia Thermopolis, the princess of the fictional country Genovia, has also confirmed that Julie Andrews is eager to return. She will be reprising her role as Mia's grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi.

Speaking on the show "Watch What Happens Live," Hathaway said that the movie has a script. She has also discussed doing "Princess Diaries 3" with Andrews and the producer, Debra Martin-Chase.

The actress, however, said that they don't want to rush the project. They want to make sure everything is ready and set for "Princess Diaries 3" so they are working on something perfect. They don't want to deliver a film for the sake of just having another sequel.

Plans for a "Princess Diaries 3" has been hatched more than three years ago after Hathaway gave birth to her first child. Producer Garry Marshall revealed that  Hathaway wanted to revisit the princess character as sort of her comeback film after resting from work when her baby arrived. Marshall went as far as to discuss bringing the third movie to the franchise with Disney then. However, he died in mid-2016 before concrete plans were settled.

Meanwhile, Hathaway's love interest in the first "Princess Diaries," Robert Schwartzman (Michael Moscovitz), revealed to Page Six that he'd be happy to return for the third installment. He said that he had a great time working on the first movie, where Hathaway was just in the early stages of her successful career.

But Schwartzman has no idea what "Princess Diaries 3" entails or if his character has been written into the script. Fans of the franchise may recall that his character was not in the second movie since Thermopolis fell in love with Nicholas Devereaux, whom "Wonder Woman" star Chris Pine played.

Pine, on the other hand, has expressed in the past that he would also be happy to return to "Princess Diaries" with Hathaway. But details to the storyline for the third film are still being kept under wraps.

Disney developed two "Princess Diaries" movies based on a book series from author Meg Cabot. But the story of Mia as the future ruler of Genovia went on in the printed format long after the last movie ran in theaters. Thus, there could still be a lot more to tell from Mia's life on the big screen.
