The final movie in the third phase of the "Avengers" franchise, "Avengers: Endgame," has been treated like a send-off for actors Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers) and Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man/Tony Stark) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But now, reports say Evans might not be leaving the MCU completely because he's going to be taking on a new role.
According to Cosmic Book News, Evans could be directing Marvel projects in the future. Specifically, he'll likely do episodes of productions that are going to be part of the Disney+ streaming platform, which will launch in the last quarter of this year.
Though details to these projects have not yet been ironed out, there are at least three MCU series in the pipeline. These include a show featuring a young Loki with Tom Hiddleston, "The Vision and Scarlet Witch" series, and the Winter Soldier/Falcon series. It's safe to guess that Evans might be signing up for the last show since this will be a spinoff of his "Captain America" movies.
For years, Evans has repeatedly said that he's ready to throw in the towel and have someone else play Captain America. Thus, the rumors surfaced that his character will die in the final movie.
But even "Avengers" producer Joe Russo doesn't believe the actor will not return for MCU. Last November, Russo actually hinted that Evans is not yet done with the MCU. He didn't want to elaborate on his statement except to say that fans will understand what he meant by this in due time.
Meanwhile, sources also said that the MCU is in for big changes as it moves to phase four. It will get bigger with the addition of the characters from the FOX franchise once the deal with Disney, Marvel's parent company, is completed.
From there, the MCU will be divided into two categories and the presentations will not be linear. Instead, the movies will also deliver prequels and flash-forwards. The MCU will also be picking out newcomers and unknowns to lead the movies. But the studio will be casting popular stars as the villains, as it's been the growing trend.
Fans can catch Evans' final outing, allegedly, as Captain America when "Avengers: Endgame" opens in theaters in the United States on April 26, 2019. Aside from Downey and Evans, this film also stars Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Josh Brolin (Thanos).
