Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw released its trailer showing its unusual villain Idris Elba as a superhuman. This is new in the Fast & Furious franchise since previous movies focused on street racing culture, but now, it seems like it is moving forward to be a full-on superhero series. The upcoming spin-off Hobbs & Shaw is taking the movie on a different level.
The first trailer introduces Elba's villain character, Brixton, as a "superhuman terrorist." At the beginning of the clip, Brixton was at a high-tech lab, wherein mechanical arms are projecting and seemed to be coding his scarred body, as well as activating an electrical system on his skeletal structure.
The bulletproof, superhuman villain said he's dealing with the future of the planet and he's a human evolutionary change. Although it's unclear about Brixton's real motive, the trailer likely illustrates Hobbs & Shaw is completely different from other Fast & Furious movies, the Comicbook reported.
In previous interviews, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was already giving hints that the spin-off will be the "biggest showdown" in Fast & Furious franchise. The Rock's Hobbs & Shaw brand seemed to be competing with Vin Diesel's Fast & Furious series, as it can be recalled the two had a very public fall out during the production of The Fate of the Furious.
The franchise has been taking the series into a superhero territory after director Justin Lin introduced Johnson's character, Luke Hobbs, in Fast Five. Previous films already showed cars dragging bank vault, Dom Toretto (Diesel) catching Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) mid-air during a collision, and all. Thus, the word "superhuman" is now showing the different side of the movie, action-packed with a touch of sci-fi.
As for The Rock, the spin-off served like a way for him to get the G.I. Joe franchise he always wanted. Meanwhile, Elba is also a good fit to be the superhuman villain as he made the character looked good. Brixton is a badass than Hobbs and Shaw combined, although some speculated the two might end up being "enhanced humans" at some point, or by the end of the movie. Now that Hobbs & Shaw stepped up, it's interesting to see how Fast & Furious 9 will be reshaped.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw has wrapped production, and it will hit the big screen on July 26, 29, 2019, while Fast & Furious 9 will reportedly be released on April 10, 2020.
