'Bright 2' is slowly coming together. After Netflix announced its plans for a sequel last January 2018, production is coming along swiftly.
A report from Discussing Film revealed that Netflix had hired the same production designer, Andrew Menzies, to help build the next installment. Menzies served as the art director on "Avatar" and has also worked in films like "Artificial Intelligence," "Fury," and "The Chronicles of Riddick."
In March 2018, the streaming platform also confirmed that David Ayer ("Fury") would be back as director of the movie that starred Will Smith (Daryl Ward) and Joel Edgerton (Nick Jakoby) as Los Angeles cops. But the original writer for "Bright," Max Landis ("Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency"), will not be back to work on the sequel because of some creative issues with Ayer.
Instead, Netflix tapped Evan Spiliotopoulos to write "Bright 2." The scribe's other credits include the live-action "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Huntsman: Winter's War."
"Bright" was a huge film for Netflix despite its bad reviews. But the streaming platform bosses said that "Bright" had 11 million views in its first three days of release in the U.S, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
With a budget of $90 million, the film presented an alternate universe where humans co-existed with elves, dwarves, orcs, ogres, giants, goblins and centaurs. Like people, these creatures had jobs, families, and relationships. Magic is also quite real in this alternate universe, but it could only be controlled by a special breed called Brights.
Edgerton's character was the first orc to become a cop. He and Smith's character ended up protecting a female elf who was a Bright.
The actor told Yahoo! Entertainment that "Bright 2" will have a bigger storyline, as most sequels go. This time, Daryl and Nick will be venturing outside of Los Angeles. He also hinted that they might go international.
Edgerton isn't also bothered by the first film's bad reviews from critics for as long as the viewers loved the movie. He once compared the feedback to "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (2015), which received the opposite reaction with its high review scores but a divisive plot that fans debated over and over.
Principal photography for "Bright 2," however, won't start until later this year. Smith is still working on the "Bad Boys 3" sequel with Martin Lawrence, while Edgerton just finished "Boy Erased." Fans who might want to catch or rewatch "Bright" can still access the film on Netflix, where it's still streaming.
