The Democratic party on Thursday unveiled a new proposal called the "Green New Deal." The proposed program is said to be focused on providing U.S. citizens with economic security - even for those who refuse to work.
According to CNBC News, an overview of the proposal stated that it aims to achieve a "massive transformation of our society" that will result in a country that is free of fossil fuels. The overview added that the plan will "create millions of family supporting-wage [sic] union jobs."
Analysts noted that the proposal is similar to former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. Roosevelt's resolution was focused on helping the Americas recover following the Great Depression. However, it didn't provide job-avoiding citizens with an option for security.
The Democratic party's plan overview did not provide details about the reported option for Americans who were either unwilling or unable to work. On the other hand, it used the term "unwilling" so as to give the non-working community hopes for security in the near future.
Democrats have long been fighting for more attention on climate change. With the Green New Deal finally introduced to the House of Representatives, analysts expect that the party will now have more chances of reaching their goals.
Unlike other proposals, the plan, spearheaded by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), is not legislation. Instead, it is considered a roadmap for Congress to discuss the issue of increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
Among the plan's supporters are four presidential candidates who are also co-sponsors of the green-inclined proposal. According to Fortune, a total of 9 senators and 60 House members have shown support for the Green New Deal.
The main goal of the proposal is for the United States to achieve a net-zero greenhouse gas emission level within the next 10 years. Furthermore, it will create renewable energy ventures and will also support upgrades to infrastructure projects in the country.
Another sector that the new plan tackled is sustainable agriculture as part of the efforts to avoid climate-change related disasters that could be prevented by "greener" processes and logistics. The abovementioned issues are expected to pivot towards providing millions of jobs to Americans.
No budget was discussed yet for the Green New Deal. However, Ocasio-Cortez said of the programs included in the plan, "For every one dollar invested in infrastructure we get six dollars back."
Some analysts pointed out that the Green New Deal has no specific programs described. Others also doubt that it will pass the Senate, noting that it is mostly controlled by the Republican party.
