"The Irishman" has been much-buzzed about ever since it was announced that Martin Scorsese would be reuniting with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro for another mob movie. Netflix has been mum about the details to the show's release but a report finally confirmed it is coming this year.
According to actor Sebastian Maniscalco, who plays the crime boss Joe Gallo in "The Irishman," the film is going to be streamed on Netflix this October. Maniscalco revealed the big premiere date secret while talking to Joe Rogan on his podcast series.
Manicalco also shared that a week leading up to filming "The Irishman," he had trouble getting a night of good sleep. Apparently, he was too worked up because he would be on a scene with De Niro and Joe Pesci, his onscreen idols.
"The Irishman" is Scorsese's most expensive film with an estimated budget of $175 million. The movie follows the story of the Irishman, Frank Sheeran (De Niro), the union leader with ties to the mafia, who confessed the things he did for the mob and Jimmy Hofa (Pacino). The confessions became a book, titled "I Heard You Paint Houses," from author Charles Brandt, which was the basis for the movie.
"The Irishman" also stars Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin, Bobby Cannavale and Ray Roman. Steven Zaillian adapted the script that will be interspersed with a series of flashbacks. However, the movie did not employ younger versions of the actors. Instead, Netflix gave Scorsese the go signal to invest in a technology that would age De Niro as a 30-year-old man.
Brandt revealed via Joe that he witnessed De Niro's de-aging process, as well as Pacino's, during post-production at the Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) studio. The technology, developed by Pablo Helman, made editing the film easier but more meticulous as the process took about a year to perfect. Before editing, principal photography for "The Irishman" took place in late 2017 and wrapped up in early 2018.
Scorsese has been developing "The Irishman" for several years because he wanted to work with Pacino and De Niro again. The last time these three did a movie together was in the 1995 mob film "Casino."
However, no studio wanted to fund the movie until Netflix. During a panel interview, the director said that the streaming platform took a risk with taking on "The Irishman." The movie, however, will also be running in theaters for a limited period and at the same time that it's out on Netflix this October.
