"Lethal Weapon" season 4 is still in the renewal bubble. FOX has not yet confirmed if the show will be back since there are still a few episodes left to air for the third season.
But executive producer Matt Miller said he's sure Damon Wayans will return to the show if it gets another year. Miller revealed in a podcast interview with Slashfilm that Wayans is in a better place now than ever before so he firmly believes that the actor will still be part of "Lethal Weapon" season 4, once FOX confirms the series.
In October 2018, Wayans announced that he'd finish filming the series by December. Citing health reasons, Wayans said that it's taking a toll on his body to be working 16 hours a day since he's diabetic.
Miller confirmed in the podcast that Wayans, who' s in his late '50s, had to slow down from work on "Lethal Weapon" because of his health. He started having medical issues halfway through the third season, so they agreed that he wouldn't have to finish work on the rest of the episodes.
But the executive producer also said Wayans left quite happy and in beautiful headspace during his last days on the set. He also doesn't have any problems with his new co-star, Sean William Scott, who joined the series as Clayne Crawford's replacement.
If the work schedule would be an issue for Wayans once "Lethal Weapon" season 4 begins production, Miller said they can always devise ways to accommodate whatever he needs. They might have to cut back on letting Wayans do his stunts, for example.
During the Television Critics Association panel interview, FOX boss Charlie Collier expressed optimism about "Lethal Weapon." He cited that the third season has definitely hit a stride, so it's likely the show will still be in its schedule next season. Miller expects that the series can still have stories to tell until season 6 or 7.
Meanwhile, the next episode of "Lethal Weapon" season 3, which airs on Tuesday, Feb. 12, will feature Cole (Scott) and Murtaugh (Wayans) investigating a case involving a father and daughter who have been caught crossing the Mexican-US border. Murtaugh's wife, Trish (Keesha Sharp), on the other hand, begins her campaign for District Attorney and some dirty secrets about her younger life have surfaced in the press.
In the next episode, airing Feb. 19, Cole seeks Tom Barnes (Mykelti Williamson) help about a case against the advice of Murtaugh. The two have a big disagreement that will test their partnership.
