The Asian contingent for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup is now complete. Jordan, Iran, and the Philippines essayed contrasting victories during the last day of the FIBA Asian Qualifiers. The three teams booked its tickets to China to compete against the best in the world for basketball supremacy.
The national teams of the Jordan, Philippines, and Iran scored convincing wins against their opponents at the very last day of the Asian Qualifiers. In must-win games, Jordan and the Philippines defeated New Zealand and Kazakhstan to claim their tickets to the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
For the Philippines, it needed the help of South Korea to advance to the World Cup. South Korea came from behind to beat Lebanon, and in turn, dash the latter's World Cup dream and gave the Filipinos the chance to advance. The Philippines, a heavyweight in Asian basketball, struggled during the later stages of the tournament but recovered in time to claim the seventh and last Asian-Oceana ticket to the World Cup.
The men's national basketball teams of Jordan, Iran, and the Philippines join the teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, and the host country China as the official Asian representatives for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The Asian contingent will compete against five teams from Africa, seven teams from the Americas, and 12 teams from Europe during the 18th staging of the Basketball World Cup.
The qualified teams from Africa include Africa, Angola, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Senegal, and Tunisia. The qualifiers from Europe include the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Russia, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Serbia, Spain, and Turkey. Meanwhile, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, USA, and Venezuela have also qualified for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. As of press time, there is still one slot left up for grabs in the European Qualifiers and two slots available for the Americas Qualifiers.
The top eight finishers in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup will automatically qualify for the men's basketball tournament in the 2020 Summer Olympics. In addition to the top eight teams, two teams each from the Americas and Europe, and the top team each from Africa, and Asia and Oceana will join Japan (host nation) in the Olympics.
The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be held from August 31 to September 15, 2019, in China. The World Cup games will be held in eight different locations, including, Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, Foshan, Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou. The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be held in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.
