Errol Spence Jr. wants to a unification title fight against Manny Pacquiao, this much is clear. "The Truth" also wants the mega-fight with the Pacman to be held at the AT&T Center, formerly Cowboys Stadium. Spence Jr. is scheduled to defend his title against the dangerous Mikey Garcia this March.
Earlier, Spence Jr. revealed that he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao "anywhere." The unbeaten American boxer even added that he is willing to fight the Filipino ring icon in the Philippines if that's what it took to get the Pacman into a ring with him. However, Spence Jr., it seems had a change of heart and conceded that fighting Pacquiao in the United States, specifically at the AT&T Stadium makes more sense.
If fight fans think that Spence Jr., the IBF welterweight titleholder, has backed down from a Philippine fight, they would be wrong. And if boxing analysts think that having a Spence-Pacquiao unification match in Texas is the way to go, then they would be right. Excluding Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, Spence Jr., along with Keith Thurman, Terrence Crawford, and Shawn Porter are the biggest names in the welterweight division.
So having Spence Jr. and Pacquiao headline a pay-per-view event on FOX that could be held at the AT&T Stadium makes more sense than having two of the best active welterweights slug it out in the Philippines. After all, Pacquiao has a very good track record in Texas, having top-billed the first two boxing events at the Cowboys Stadium. In those matches, Pacquiao utterly dominated both Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito in the said stadium.
While Spence Jr. is looking forward to a mega-fight with WBA "regular" welterweight champ Pacquiao, he admitted that he isn't looking past Mikey Garcia. Spence Jr. knows how dangerous the undefeated Garcia is. After all, Garcia, who is fighting as a welterweight for the first time in his career, has won four major world titles in four weight classes on the way to a 39-0 record (30 wins via stoppage).
Before committing to fight Garcia, Spence Jr. has reportedly set his sights in unifying the welterweight division. Spence Jr. wanted to fight the WBA 'Super" welterweight champ Keith Thurman or the WBC welterweight titleholder Shawn Porter. But those fights didn't materialize and Garcia called out Spence Jr. and the American answered the call. And if Spence Jr. gets past Garcia, a potential dream match against Pacquiao may be in the horizon.
The odds-makers currently have Spence Jr. as a 4-1 favorite to prevail over Garcia. Spence Jr. and Garcia will square off on March 16 in what the fight analysts have already billed as the fight of the year. And barring any upsets, Spence Jr. could land the biggest fight of his career, a unification matchup against the future Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao possibly at the AT&T Stadium.
