True Detective season 3 concluded on HBO last Sunday, Feb. 24, with some resolutions. Fans might still be processing what went on in the finale, but creator Nic Pizzolatto has confirmed he has hatched some ideas as a follow up to this show's wild mystery.

HBO, however, has not yet announced if True Detective season 4 is happening. The show's renewal won't likely be confirmed until much later this year, but Pizzolatto told Entertainment Weekly he'd got a "really, really wild" story in mind.

The scribe, however, clarified that he isn't in a hurry to start working on his ideas for True Detective season 4. "I think it needs to percolate for a while," Pizzolatto said.

But it's highly likely HBO will renew True Detective for season 4 given the recent response from HBO President Casey Bloys. During an interview with Deadline, Bloys said that they are thrilled with the reactions from viewers and critics for True Detective season 3. He also confirmed that Pizzolatto has expressed to them his ideas for the fourth season, but there are also not in a rush to make things happen.

Rumors have it, however, that True Detective season 4 could circle back to the characters of True Detective season 1. Is it possible viewers may once again see Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reprise their roles as detectives Rust Cohle and Marty Hart?

It was not lost on viewers that there were a lot of references to True Detective season 1 in season 3, as per CBR. The filmmaker Elisa (played by Sarah Gadon) connected the case from season 1 to the case the detectives Wayne Hays (played by Mahershala Ali) and Roland West (played by Stephen Dorff) were working on.

Specifically, Elisa thinks that the Crooked Spiral cult, which Cohle referred to in True Detective season 1, has grown bigger. The show also hinted that this part of the story is not yet finished even if True Detective season 3 wrapped up.

Meanwhile, Hays and West did find out where Julie Purcell (played by Bea Santos) was all these years. It finally put an end to the investigations of their decades-long case however tragic the answer they got.

Whatever Junius Watts (played by Steven Williams) told Hays and West is just one version of the truth though. This gives fans hope that True Detective season 3 was a set up to a fitting sequel to the first season, which will eventually be told in True Detective season 4.
