Venezuela's Vice President Delcy Rodrigues will convene with Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, on Monday to discuss cooperation and coordination with Russia to counter any attempt of military action or invasion. Venezuela's civil war has heightened after the United States urged its allies to recognize the opposition leader Juan Guido as the new president of the nation.
Jorge Arreaza, Venezuela's Foreign Minister, warned the nation of the threat of war while the President of the nation, Nicolas Maduro, urged his troops to stay alert. The president said that the offer of international aid is a pretext for invasion.
Venezuela found support from Russia and China through substantial amounts of loans that will keep its economy afloat amid the pressure from the United States and the economic sanctions imposed on its inflation-ravaged economy.
Recently, the United States pleaded the United Nations for a vote that will urge "the peaceful restoration of democracy" in Venezuela. The United States calls for an election in Venezuela as they support the opposition leader. A council diplomat said that they will expect to put the drafted resolution to a vote on Thursday. It is, however, expected that Russia will veto the resolution in support of the Venezuelan President.
The Ambassador Vassily Nebenza commented as a Security Council meeting on Tuesday that the attempt of the Venezuelan opposition to bring ais shipments from Colombia this weekend is nothing but a "humanitarian show" created by the United States. He added that the Trump Administration's sole purpose is to change the regime in Venezuela for their own interest and they are planning to do so through foreign intervention which clearly violates the United Nation Charter's principle in which nations should never interfere with the internal affairs of another country.
In response to the United States draft, Russia also circulated a rival draft resolution wherein they expressed their concern over the threats to use force against Venezuela and to intervene in its domestic matters. The draft calls for the support for peaceful international dispute settlement and he urged other nations to settle the Venezuelan situation through peaceful means.
The United States claims that there is a need for intervention in the Venezuelan situation because Maduro's regime disrupted peace and security in the region through its actions that have caused an economic collapse.
