George R.R. Martin has remained silent on the progress of The Winds of Winter since he first confirmed the book in 2011. The veteran author has been very vocal about his struggle in writing the sixth installment of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, which pushed fans to speculate that TWOW would be delayed anew.

In an interview, George R.R. Martin said that The Winds of Winter is no different from his previous books. The 70-year-old American novelist said that the next new tome would also have various twists and turns in its storyline. He admitted that completing TWOW is very challenging for him.

"The Winds of Winter is not so much a novel as a dozen novels, each with a different protagonist, each having a different cast of supporting players, antagonists, allies and lovers around them, and all of these weaving together against the march of time in an extremely complex fashion," George R.R. Martin said about the forthcoming sixth A Song of Ice and Fire book. "So it's very, very challenging. Fire and Blood by contrast was very simple. Not that it's easy - it still took me years to put together - but it is easier," he went on.

This, according to reports, is among the many possible reasons why The Winds of Winter had not been published yet. However, recent reports suggest that George R.R. Martin could drop the up-and-coming new book any time soon after he, reportedly, refused to do a cameo appearance in the finale episode of Game of Thrones Season 8.

EconoTimes shared that George R.R. Martin chose not to get involved with the hit HBO series because he wants to focus on completing The Winds of Winter, which was delayed again and again. The Nightflyers writer revealed that Game of Thrones showrunners David Weiss and David Benioff asked him to have a guest appearance in one of the last few episodes. While he was tempted to grab the opportunity, Martin said he could take the time to travel back to Belfast, where he is allegedly writing the remaining chapters of TWOW.

Because of this, avid followers of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series started speculating that George R.R. Martin could drop The Winds of Winter very soon. This might be possible since the veteran writer, previously, hinted that TWOW could arrive in early 2019.

While these speculations might come into a reality, it is important to note that George R.R. Martin has not revealed any details about the book's official release date up to this writing. Hence, fans should take these unconfirmed claims lightly until everything is proven true and correct. For now, stay tuned to Business Times China for the latest The Winds of Winter news and updates.
