Wentworth season 7 has been filming in Australia since September 2018. Set for a 13-episode release, the upcoming installment, which originally runs on Foxtel's Showcase channel Down Under, is expected to stream the new season on Netflix U.S. as well.
But the streaming platform and the broadcast network have not yet confirmed the actual release date for Wentworth season 7 at this point. According to Netflix Life, however, there's a good chance that viewers will get to see the new season in the U.S. in the late summer or early fall.
Wentworth usually begins a new season around April or May in Australia. But the last season saw the show start its run in the middle of June for the very first time. Despite the slight shift in schedule, however, the Netflix release dates have been consistent with its pattern in that there's a two to three months difference between the broadcast run and the streaming service run.
So, if Wentworth season 7 premieres on Showcase in Australia this April, Netflix subscribers in the U.S. may expect to watch the new season by June or July. Consequently, if Wentworth season 7 begins its run by June in Australia, the show's release date in the U.S. will likely be sometime late August or September.
Despite being an Australian series, Wentworth has a strong following in the U.S. because of its quality writing and compelling story. Described as a cross between Orange is the New Black and Prison Break, the show has been lauded for its realistic storylines and ground-breaking themes that feature the plight of women in prison.
Meanwhile, Wentworth season 7 is expected to wrap up the cliffhanger from season 6 in the first episode back. The fight between Rita (played by Leah Purcell) and Drago (played by Natalia Novikova) in last season's finale may have paved the way for Rita to take on The Freak (played by Pamela Rabe) in the upcoming installment.
However, changes to the prison are also underway with the coming of a new top dog in Wentworth season 7. Vera (played by Kate Atkinson) will also have her baby in the next installment, according to Who. But will she love her child even if she despised the father?
Ahead of the seventh season run, Foxtel announced in December that Wentworth is also getting the 8th season. There will be 20 episodes to this installment, which ensures that the show will be on the air until 2021.
