No one really expected Sacred Games to be a popular series. But considering the overwhelming response, the Indian gangster drama has received, it is no surprise a second season is on the works.

According to Otakukart, Sacred Games Season 2 is officially happening. Netflix has renewed the show for a second season, let alone release a teaser for the next chapter.

The popularity of the show proved its acceptance from its core audience. After all, India is known for creating stellar shows, which is why the American media-services provider used it to empower its video streaming platform. And while it was initially intended for the Indian audience, the show has rapidly grown in popularity across the world.

Though, the release date of Sacred Games Season 2 remains under wraps. But there are things fans should be excited about. For starters, the show is based on Vikram Chandra's 2006 novel of the same name. Also, Netflix utilized a quarter of it for the first season. In other words, it is possible for the platform to make it into a regular show. And, if anything, there could be at least four seasons to complete the book.

The first season of Sacred Games was released in July last year. If the show is going to follow the same format, which is possible, the next season could arrive in the same month this year. This means that fans will have to wait at least six months to check out the next season.

Sacred Games Season 2 will reportedly feature a total of eight episodes. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Saif Ali Khan are panned to reprise their roles as Gaitonde and Sartaj Singh, respectively. Other supporting cast members are also expected to be back.

The first season of the show, which ended with a cliffhanger, was directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane. But as far as the second season is concerned, The Indian Express reports that it will be co-directed by Kashyap and director Neeraj Ghaywan ("Masaan"). Motwane, on the other hand, will remain as the showrunner.

The first season of Sacred Games saw Sartej discovering the location of the bunker, which could be the missing puzzle piece in saving Mumbai. The show acquired incredible reviews from critics and fans alike. Its rise to popularity has paved the way for other Netflix originals originating from India to be included in the spotlight.
