Netflix released the drama series Northern Rescue on Friday, March 1. The show, which stars William "Billy" Baldwin and Kathleen Robinson, is a co-production with Canada's CBC Gem and has been gaining popularity fast on both streaming platforms.
Just days after its release, Baldwin thanked the show's viewers on Twitter for putting Northern Rescue on the Popular on Netflix category. "The buzz is so great!!" the actor said. "Very proud of it... spread the word!!"
The actor plays a father and rescuer named John West in Northern Rescue. His character is great at his job and is kind of a hero for making daring rescues, but he struggles to connect with his family at home.
Then, tragedy strikes as John loses his wife to cancer. The rock of the family was no longer around to be the glue that holds them together in Northern Rescue. So, he decides to move his whole family to Turtle Island, where his wife's sister Charlie Anders (played by Kathleen Robertson) lives.
Maddie (played by Amalia Williamson), Scout (played by Spencer MacPherson), Taylor (played by Taylor West) are trying to adjust to a new life while still struggling with the loss of their mother and dealing with their relationship with their dad. The story is told from Maddie's voice, as she provides the narration in Northern Rescue as a way to tell her therapist what's going on.
Every episode features a new rescue for John to provide as a background theme for what's going on in their family unit. The brokenness of their relationship, however, builds up the drama as it highlights the struggles of single parenting.
But the biggest drama of it all comes from Maddie, who has been keeping a big secret from her siblings. She's in a lot of pressure to keep this secret since it will soil the integrity of their mother.
Incidentally, Northern Rescue is Williamson's first major job on television, as per Holr Magazine. She said that she cried from excitement and happiness when she found out she got the role.
Her audition piece included a scene where she had to argue with the mother before she died. "I say horrible things to her and we're yelling and screaming and the emotional reaction I got from it made me know I had to play her," the actress said.
Maddie's storyline has been the cliffhanger for Northern Rescue season 1, which has left eager viewers wanting for more. Will Netflix and CBC Gem deliver a second season to continue the story of the rebellious and headstrong Maddie?
So far, there has been no official word from both streaming platforms. The show's social media account has been encouraging fans to let Netflix and CBC Television that they want a second season.
