Many fans are still waiting for the BBC to confirm Sherlock Season 5. The British crime drama television series based on the books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has been on a hiatus for quite some time now. This, then, pushed some avid followers of the show to create their theories and predictions about its future.

Reports about Sherlock Season 5 not happening have been, endlessly, making rounds online since there are no official details released about the series' return up to this writing. Another reason why others think that a fifth installment might be possible at the point is because of the alleged bad blood between series lead stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

It can be recalled that Martin, previously, told The Telegraph how he felt about doing the show. "People's expectations, some of it's not fun anymore," the 47-year-old English actor told the publication, adding that meeting fans' expectations can be very stressful and "not a thing to be enjoyed." This, then, sparked speculations that he would not reprise his role should Sherlock Season 5 be pushed through.

Benedict Cumberbatch, for his part, took a swipe on his co-star and shared that he did not feel that way at all. "I didn't engage with it that much," the 42-year-old star said as a response to Martin's statements. "I'm very grateful for the support, but that's about it," he went on. Because of this, many fans started wondering if Sherlock Season 5 could still happen due to Martin and Benedict's contradicting opinions.

In August 2018, an insider named Chris Georgiou revealed to Time Out that there would be Sherlock Season 5. Chris, who runs the sandwich shop located near the location the 221b Baker Street, claimed he heard that the cast and crew are coming back for another installment. "I probably shouldn't be saying this, but I've heard they'll be coming back for a fifth season," he said.

Aside from that, series co-creator Steven Moffat has also confirmed there is a huge possibility that BBC would renew the show for another run. He even told Radio Times, in February 2018, that the future of the show is up to them since nobody has refused to do a comeback in the yet-to-be-confirmed Sherlock Season 5.

Mark Gatiss, who is one of the series creators, previously, said that filming the fourth season was difficult due to Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman's hectic schedule. Though most cast and crew are willing to do Sherlock Season 5 the soonest time possible, it's just that their time does not allow it at the moment. "I think it would be nice to leave them and then come back and see what's happened to them," he added.

Rumors have it that the fifth installment might be released sometime in 2022 or 2023. Stay tuned to Business Times China for the latest news and updates about Sherlock Season 5.
