Lex Luthor will have a strong presence in the finale of Supergirl season 4. Co-showrunner Jessica Queller confirmed that they had booked Jon Cryer to keep playing the role until the end of the current season's run.
Speaking with IGN, Queller said that Lex Luthor would be a "major player" in the second half of Supergirl season 4 on The CW. Viewers will bear witness to his evil power until the show wraps up and completes its fourth season.
Additionally, the finale episode will be titled "The Quest for Peace," which is similar to the fourth movie's title starring Christopher Reeves as Superman. However, the showrunners clarified that there would be no encounters between Superman and Lex Luthor in Supergirl season 4.
Viewers may remember that Superman (played by Tyler Hoechin) moved to Argo City with Lois Lane (played by Elizabeth Tulloch) in the earlier episodes of Supergirl season 4. They planned on Lois to give birth under the red sun hence it's unlikely that the Superman will battle with Lex Luthor this season.
But the writers of Supergirl are not completely closing its doors to this plot development next season. However, for now, Kara Danvers will need to deal with the villain without his cousin.
Cryer, on the other hand, confirmed via Vulture that he has yet to film the finale of Supergirl season 4. He already finished work on two episodes, and he is preparing for the big showdown at the end. The actor also dished that there are currently talks for him to return for the fifth season.
The CW renewedSupergirl for season 5 last January. The early renewal is a no-brainer since the show is part of the annual "Arrowverse" crossover event, which happens during the end of the year, alongside Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.
"The early renewal of these signature CW series gives us a head start on laying out the 2019-2020 season, and this is just the beginning," The CW executive Mark Pedowitz said in the press release. "These shows provide a strong foundation for our multiplatform programming strategy."
Meanwhile, Supergirl season 4 episode 16 will feature star Melissa Benoist playing dual roles as Supergirl and clone the Red Daughter. The preview shows Benoist speaking in a Russian accent as the clone, which Lex Luthor created.
It's unclear, however, what the villain's agenda is at this point. The writers promised everything would soon make sense since the series is slowly winding down its current run. Supergirl season 4 episode 16 will air on The CW on March 24.
