Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May is in deep trouble as the deadline for Brexit draws near. With no deal yet and just a few days remaining before the U.K. withdraws from the European Union, the senior cabinet ministers want the PM to resign and have someone else to hold her position in order to save the Brexit.
According to The Times, 11 ministers convened and decided to replace her with deputy David Lidington. It was reported that in a series of desperate phone calls, the senior ministers agreed that Theresa May must announce now that she is stepping down. With the call for her resignation, the ministers justified their decision by saying that the PM has become a "toxic and erratic figure whose judgment has gone haywire."
Amid the plotters' plan to confront her and demand for her resignation, May was reported to have called for the key members of her Cabinet and some Tory rebels. They were summoned to her official residence at Chequers house as the PM wants to make one last bid to arrive at an agreement within her warring party in order to finally drive Britain into Brexit.
Just less than five days remaining with the March 29 Bexit and Theresa May must push a meaningful vote for her deal since Britain will still have to leave EU even without a deal. This situation is pressuring the PM to leave her prime minister's post but the Washington Times reported that there is no sign that she will step down.
It can be recalled that the troubled British PM May was not able to get enough support in Parliament for the Brexit deal that her government and the European Union had agreed on last year. Legislators vote against her Brexit plan twice and the prime minister expressed her wish for third voting as there could be lawmakers who would like to change their votes but this may not happen anymore based on the experts' opinions.
Now, the emergency meeting called by May began at 3 p.m. and two of the politicians (environment secretary Michel Gove and deputy David Lidington) that the ministers are considering as possible replacements once the PM quits have both arrived at May's residence for the talks. Aside from them, Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay, Julian Smith, and Brandon Lewis were also in attendance, The Daily Star reported.
As mentioned earlier, Theresa May also invited some Tories and they sat across from the PM during the meeting. Brexiteer rebels who joined the emergency meeting are Damian Green, Boris Johnson, Iain Duncan Smith, and Dominic Raab. Moreover, David Davis and Jacob Rees-Mogg, the head of the influential Brexiteer cabal, the European Research Group are also said to be attending.
Meanwhile, a million people joined the Brexit march and they protested in central London and demanded another EU vote as the MPs try to figure out a way to resolve the Brexit deadlock.
