Aquaman surprised everyone as it becomes the biggest DC movie following its release just last year. DC and Warner Bros are reportedly developing a sequel due to the massive success of the first movie, and the news was officially confirmed in February 2019. Now, here's everything you need to know about Aquaman 2.
The first movie's co-writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is reportedly penning the script of the sequel, while Peter Safran alongside James Wan will serve as the producers - yet it's unknown if the latter will direct the sequel as well. As for the release date of Aquaman 2, Warner Bros announced the sequel would hit the theaters on December 16, 2022, which is four years after the first movie premiered. Also, 2019 and 2020 are packed with other DC films such as Shazam, Joker, Birds of Prey, and Wonder Woman 1984. Perhaps, Aquaman spin-off The Trench will be released first before the sequel.
Since the movie will be released in 2022, don't expect the trailer until late 2021. Meanwhile, as for the cast of Aquaman 2, Jason Momoa will of course return as Arthur Curry/Aquaman. The actor has been keen for the sequel, and he pitched an idea for it while still shooting the first movie. Other cast members to join Momoa in the sequel includes Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Orm), Willem Dafoe (Vulko), Yahya Abdul-Mateen (Black Manta), Nicole Kidman (Atlanna), and Dolph Lundgren (Nereus). Some speculated Julie Andrews would also return as Karathen.
The plot of Aquaman 2 will likely focus on the early days of the reign of the new King Aquaman, possibly deals with the first threat he encountered as Lord of Atlantis. Speaking of threats, there are some villains left from the first movie - such as Orm/Ocean Master. He is the villainous half-brother of Aquaman, who might have been stopped but the latter crucially spares his life. So, there's a chance he might be coming back to the sequel to haunt them. Black Manta will also be back as he's the greatest foe of Aquaman.
Aside from these two, King Nereus could also be a threat in the sequel - since he's sometimes a villain in comics. Although it seems like he's happy Aquaman returned to Atlantis in the end, the second movie might reveal some of his evil sides. Other threats and villains in Aquaman 2 might also include Mera's evil sister Siren, the parasitic magical entity called The Thirst, ocean god Triton, Dead King, Malignant Amoeba, Queequeg, and Iceberg Head.
