Pay-Per-View boxing just got a lot better as boxing insider Mike Coppinger once again speculates a star-studded bout between International Boxing Federation champ Errol Spence, Jr. and World Boxing Council standout Shawn Porter.
The match is said "to be in the works", and should be set for September in Dallas, Texas via Fox Sports or Showtime. The Ring Magazine writer also predicted another potential PPV, this time between Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman.
Coppinger's thoughts, which he detailed through his Twitter account, see that the two fighters will clash in a welterweight unification match. Both Spence and Porter won their last matches, with the former defeating Mikey Garcia via a 12-round unanimous decision last March and the latter conquering Yordenis Ugas en route to securing a 12-round split decision on the same month.
Spence also claimed that he is looking to be back in the ring in July. The only downside about this decision is that the Pacquiao-Thurman clash also targets the same month.
Boxing News 24 wrote that US boxing fans "wouldn't be happy" if they have to pay for two PPV events on the same month. This is exactly why Spence's pronouncement for a July comeback will be very unlikely. Instead, he'd have to settle for a September date with Porter should the promoters of the Pacquiao-Thurman showdown agree to host it in July. In turn, Spence will have more time if he wants to remain undefeated and keep his 25-0 with 21 KOs intact.
Porter, meanwhile, is coming off a rather mediocre victory over his "mandatory" WBC opponent in the form of Ugas. While fans saw Ugas as the winner, Boxing News 24 said that Porter is "satisfied" with the win. This means that Porter isn't keen on having a rematch with Ugas.
However, should he lose to Spence, he can always challenge Ugas for a rematch and get in line for a potential title shot.
If the camp of Porter and Spence agree to take the fight in September, it should come as the second whammy to the trilogy between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. The Canelo-Golovkin bash will be a non-PPV via DAZN.
Coppinger added that it is highly possible that Spence and Porter will meet in September since the month is "traditionally" good for PPVs. The winner between the two, alongside the top fighter of the Pacquiao-Thurman card, will be in the forefront to challenge WBO welterweight titleholder, Terrence Crawford. Only Spence made it public that he wants to fight Crawford; the other three fighters are still in the dark whether they want to be in the same street or take a different route.
