Former UFC champion Conor McGregor says that he is retired but UFC president Dana White begs to differ. In fact, he plans to sit down and discuss things with the “Notorious” although did not get into detail.
It was only last month when McGregor posted on social media that he was retiring. Not all are biting and most believe that it stems from the fact that his demands to the UFC were not being met. This is with reference to getting a share of ownership.
It is likely that McGregor and White will talk about it and figure out how serious it really is. But critics believe that the UFC president could make a counteroffer in the form of a blockbuster fight. Two names have been mentioned in recent weeks in Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The one with Diaz would be their third meeting to determine who is truly the best fighter. The one involving Nurmagomedov will be a rematch following that forgettable riot that occurred at UFC 229.
White will try to figure out the problem and try to make McGregor happy again.
“I think there are some things that Conor wants. I think that Conor wants to get together, face-to-face, he and I, and we probably will in the next couple of weeks to get this thing figured out. He’s stuck on this thing where he wants a piece of the ownership. I think there are other ways we can make him happy,” said White to 8 Las Vegas.
One other name that could enter the fray is Anthony Pettis. In a report from TMZ, the 32-year-old former UFC lightweight champion said that he would not want to talk McGregor out of retirement. While he is open to facing the Notorious, coming out of retirement would be a bad idea.
Looking over that, a Pettis vs. McGregor fight could be a dream match that UFC fans will want to watch. Apparently, Pettis (like most MMA fans) are not buying the retirement angle of McGregor.
As mentioned earlier, it is nothing more than a threat for the Irishman who is more likely to return to the cage soon. And apparently, this is one of the expected discussions he will have with White soon.
McGregor has had his ups and downs but undoubtedly remains one of the top names in the UFC. His last fight was not that impressive – meaning his next fight needs to be something to prove to fans that he can still mix it up with other fighters in his class.
